Frequently Asked Questions
What denomination is Commissioned?
Commissioned does not align itself with any one denomination. We are a local, independent church that uses the Bible as our final authority on all matters. Our church body is composed of many people with various denominational backgrounds including Protestant and Catholic as well as others who have no church background at all. For reference, however, we would wholeheartedly preach and agree with the Apostle's Creed, Westminster Confession of Faith of 1646, Second London Baptist Confession of 1689, and others like them.
What is a typical worship gathering like at Commissioned?
A typical Sunday at Commissioned involves singing songs to God, prayer, a sermon from the Bible, and awesome community! We kick things off promptly at 11am and try our very best to be finished no later than 12:15pm. The format can change sometimes, but we usually sing about four songs of worship to God, mixed in with a time of prayer, an expositional sermon from Scripture by our pastor, and then one song of reflection at the end. Afterwards, we have a time of giving for those connected with us and we receive communion once a month. The beginning (10:45am-11am) and the end (12:15pm-12:30pm) is usually filled with hanging out, eating, drinking, laughing, and getting to know each other. Of course, no one is expected to show up early or stay late!
What does Commissioned believe about...?
While we believe that specific doctrinal stances are important, the crux of what we believe about everything is simple: where the Bible is spoken, we are spoken. Where the Bible is silent, we are silent. We strive to hold to the clearly articulated teachings of Scripture without apology or error and we graciously allow individual freedom where the Bible allows it. Above all, we want to be a church known for its love for God, His Son Jesus, His scriptures, His people, and the world. We want to be a church defined by what we stand for more than what we stand against. You can find a complete statement of our doctrinal beliefs here.
What do people wear to worship gatherings at Commissioned?
Mostly cotton and the occasion twill blend (although our pastor has been known to break out the linen during the summer months). At Commissioned, we want people to be comfortable while worshipping with us, so any clothes will do. Most of us wear jeans, some of us wear shorts, a few of us wear kakis , but all of us wear shirts.
What does the name 'Commissioned' mean?
As Jesus prepared to leave this world and ascend into heaven, He left His disciples with one job - He commissioned them to make disciples of all people groups and baptize those who were converted. This is what we are all about! Jesus still expects this from His people and He still empowers them to do so through the Holy Spirit. This commission from Jesus, made possible by His death and resurrection, is central to everything we do, so our name serves as a reminder to us to live lives that are 'commissioned!'
Where does Commissioned meet each week for worshipping together?
The Lord has blessed us with a new location at Terra Centre Elementary school, located on the edge of Burke and Fairfax near the Walmart and Target. We meet in the cafeteria for worship and we use the SACC rooms for our nursery and kids Egroup.
